Happily ever after

I am confused and need help sorting through this. What are the guidelines for the terms used for a female spouse? When does your "beautiful bride" become "the misses"? and after that, "the little lady"? and finally "my old lady"? This past week I tried to skip the middle and jumped right to "my old lady." This was not met with acceptance as I had expected. I saw it as a term of endearment. She apparently didn't see it that way. It was met with a less than genuine chuckle and was told "remember, you have to sleep sometime."

Are there cut-offs having to do with age? Is it based on years of service? I am trying to be respectful and loving. When can I appropriately call her "the old lady?"

Calling her "my old lady" is nowhere near a slam like "the old nag", "the battle Axe", "the warden" or my personal favorite of all time "that asshole I live with."
